Brenda Wambui: Dead Aid by Dambisa Moyo

This was my favourite book this year. Why? 1. It is non-fiction 2. It answers a question.

I simply can’t get past page 2 of most fiction books, perhaps because I feel there’s much more to be gained from non-fiction books like biographies, epics and books that explore strange theories. This book falls in the last category, as it theorises (and in my opinion, proves) that aid has much to do with the reason Africa is in such a troubled state.

Marziya Mohammedali: Minaret by Leila Aboulela

A book I would definitely recommend is ‘Minaret’ by Leila Aboulela. The story focuses on Najwa, a Sudanese woman living and working in London. The narrative swings between Najwa’s younger days at Khartoum University and her previous life as a government official’s daughter, to the present day where she works as a maid for a rich Sudanese family.

Saliva Vic: Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas by Louise Rennison

I wasn’t much of a reader due to my over dependence on the idiot box otherwise known as television. This year I got rid of the TV & my girlfriend. Oh, I fib. What actually happened is that my girl dumped me & took the TV with her since we bought it together. Good riddance I say.
