I recently read The African Cookboy by David Dinwoodie Irving and it had a beautiful preface that’s a tribute to readers. I thought i should share it and it’s here below:

The novel is for you, the reader,
Whoever you are,
Where you may be,
However you obtain your reading pleasure –
From book stores, from friends, from second-hand charity sales
Even from discarded but still legible treasure
Found fortuitously lying in a rubbish bin
Without you,
Writer s would not, could not exist,
And the world would be a world
Bereft of shared experiences
And shared flights of soaring imagination;
Of knowledge and laughter and …
… and all those other wonderfully precious things
